Cheap Therapy and a Great Way to Stay in Shape

Let me tell you, running is a great way to relieve stress and stay in shape. It's every economical too.  Your shoes last 3 - 6 months depending on mileage and the clothing lasts longer. This is  Organized runs are nice, but not necessary.  Wannabe runners frequently ask me the same questions on how to get into the sport, so I've provided some advice below:

Shoes

Buying good shoes is the most important purchase. New runners should consider visiting a good shore store, like Fit2Run (in the Tampa/Sarasota area) if you're unsure of what type of shoe to buy. Otherwise, consider the Outlet Malls as well. They have all the major brands and good prices. Hint. Wait for a sale if you have the time.

Orthotics, combined with good shoes, can make running more comfortable and enjoyable for those with ailments. I suffer from flat feet and plantar fasciitis, but I'm still getting the miles in.  They cost around $60 and are well worth it.  Visit a good running apparel store to get fitted for orthotics. Their lifespan are normally longer than your shoes.

Clothes

Long gone are the days of cotton running cloths. You can now buy very reasonable athletic wear all over the place. Target often sells very stylish and affordable running appear that keeps you cool. The local Fit2Run often has a good inventory or running cloths. Oh, and don't forget the Outlet Mall.

Socks -  Don't skimp on the socks. Again, cotton is no go. You can pick socks up anywhere you buy running cloths and shoes.

Organized Training/Fun Runs

Consider joining a local running club or your local running store's running group. They usually have a set schedule they follow every week. Distances are variable and you get to meet people with the same interests. This might force you to run that Tuesday or Thursday evening or that Sunday morning. The running club I used to belong to would also shower following the run at a nearby facility and go out for a modest dinner and drinks.

Resources on the Web

Runnersworld.com: Probably the best magazine available. Good reviews and articles from time to time. The magazine's usefulness has shrunk over the years, but it's worth an annual subscription. The website now, it much better and most features are available without the subscription. You name it, they got it. Check it out.

Runtampa.com: Want to find a running event? Log onto runtampa.com. It's a great resource for races, group runs, and club information.

IMActive.com: Better site for those planning on running outside the Tampa area.

Fit2Run.com: I believe it's the largest running store chain in the Tampa/St. Pete/Sarasota area. Great store with knowledgeable staff and has a good website too.

Goneforarun.com: This is a great site for running appear and accessories. They have a great item to hang and display your racing bibs and finishing medals.

Sports Watches

Using ordinary chronograph watches are more than adequate when you start running. But the advances in GPS technology have made it very affordable to track your progress and actually map it out.

I currently have a Fitbit Ionic. It's lightweight, versitile, and stylish. You can use it solo or with the app in your phone. It forces me to run an honest pace. I love it. The Apple Watch is probably better, but my Fitbit is bought and paid for. Forerunners are also very reputable, and I've owned several with great results. The choice is yours. There are reviews everywhere.

How I got into running

I had asthma at an early age - but out grew it. I was plagued with knee problems, plantar faciattis (requiring surgery), and flat feet. But I now run 20 - 25 miles a week. Bottom line, you don't need the perfect body to run.

The WSJ had an article in 2011 citing "Nothing is fun until you're good at it."  That describes running. The runners you see in neighborhoods, in parks, or on the beach are loving it....because the put in the time to get good at it. Good doesn't mean fast, good means consistent. Once you get into "the zone", it's pleasant at any speed.

I created this page to provide wannabee runners with advice and motivation to take on this great sport. It's healthy and economical.

You can run solo or in groups. You can add spice to your routine by running organized events from time to time. My portfolio includes five marathons (Rome twice, Berlin, Florence, and Glasgow). I've ran probably 50 half marathons and even more 10Ks. Maybe not fast, but I completed them.

I've designed this page to facilitate new runners entry into the sport. Seasoned runners will find it helpful too.

Good luck and have a good run.

This may be the best 10K in the country. You get to see the sunrise over Tampa Bay. The view is breath taking. I ran the inaugural race last year and that was a run to remember. If you are looking for a great and unique run, this is it.

Take note, this race sells out in seconds. Why? Because it's breathtaking.  Allison Kropff mentions in here latest WTSP 10 News commercial that Tampa is home and mentions this run. She is so right!
